How to Use the Network Setup Wizard to Connect your Network to the Internet?

Are you ready to connect all the computers on your home or small business network to the Internet? If so, you can use the Network Setup Wizard to do most of the heavy lifting for you. We'll go over the steps you need to perform on the computer that has the Internet connection. This computer needs one connection to the Internet and another to the network. The Internet connection can be a cable modem, DSL modem, ISDN modem, analog modem or Ethernet interface behind a router.

  1. Click Start and then click on Control Panel.
  2. In the Control Panel, double click on Network Connections.
  3. In the Network Connections window, double click on Network Setup Wizard.
  4. Read the information on the Welcome page and click Next.
  5. Read the information on the Before you continue page. If you need some help on configuring your network, click on the checklist for creating a network link and review the steps for creating a home or small office network. When you finish reading the steps in the checklist, click Next.
  6. There are three choices on the Select a connection method page. Since this computer is directly connected to the Internet, select the first option: This computer connects directly to the Internet. If you want to learn more about home network configuration, click on the home or small office network configurations link. Click Next when you finish reading the configurations information.
  7. On the Select your Internet connection page, click on the connection that represents your link to the Internet. If you're not sure which connection is your Internet connection, click on the how to determine your Internet connection link and read the info. Then click Next.
  8. On the Give this computer a description and name page, you can enter a description that will show up in the My Network Places window. You must enter a computer name of 15 characters or less. It's best to keep the name simple, and do not include spaces in the name. If you use a name that cannot be used by the operating system, the Wizard will warn you and ask that you supply an alternate name. If you need more info about computer names and descriptions, click on the computer names and descriptions link. After you're done reading, click Next.
  9. On the Name your network page, type in a short name for your computer "workgroup". It will be easier to find all your computers in the My Network Places windows if all the computers on your network belong to the same workgroup. The name should be 15 characters or less and should have no spaces. Click Next.
  10. On the Ready to apply network settings page, read through the changes that will be made and click Next.
  11. The Wizard configures the computer to share the Internet connection with the rest of the computers on your network. When the configuration is complete, you'll see the You're almost done page. Select the Create a Network Setup Disk option. This will create a floppy disk that you can take from computer to computer on your network to configure each of them to connect to the Internet and set up file and printer sharing on each computer. Click Next.
  12. When you get to the Insert the disk you want to use page, put a floppy disk into the floppy drive. If the disk isn't a new disk, click the Format Disk button to format the disk. If it's a new disk, just click Next. The wizard creates a network setup file and copies it to the disk.
  13. The Wizard explains how to use the network setup disk on the To run the wizard with the Network Setup Disk page. Make a note of the instructions and how to run the netsetup program, and then click Next.
  14. Read the info on the Completing the Network Setup Wizard page and click Finish.
