How to Control Who Can Access the Contents of Your Folders?
If your wonderring how to control who can access files in your personal
folders and if you've been wondering how to keep people out of your stuff,
then check this out:
- Click Start and then click Control Panel. In the Control Panel, switch
to Classic View and then open the Folder Options applet.
- Click the View tab. Scroll down to the bottom of the list of Advanced
settings. Remove the checkmark from the Use simple file sharing
[Recommended] checkbox.
- Right click the Start button and click the Explore command.
- Find the file or folder to which you want to control access. Right
click the folder and click the Properties command. Click the Security tab
in the folder's Properties dialog box. If you don't see a Security tab and
you're using XP Home, boot into Safe Mode before performing this
procedure.
- First, do one of the following two actions:
- To control access for a group or user that does
not appear in the Group or user names box, click the Add button. Type the
name of the user or group for which you want to set permissions, then click
OK.
- To change or remove permissions for a current
user or group, click the name of the user or group.
- Next, perform one of the following actions:
- To allow or deny a permission, select the Allow
or Deny check box in the Permissions for User or Group checkbox.
- Click the Remove button to remove the user or
group.
- If the check boxes under Permissions for the
user or group are shaded or if the Remove button is unavailable, the file
or folder has inherited permissions from the parent folder.
